Our Observation Ethic

Puff Riddle Gardn began as a shared notebook between gardeners who kept noticing the same thing: most of the creatures people wanted to remove were either harmless or helping.

What we believe

  • Observation comes first

We describe clues and confidence levels honestly, rather than offering quick verdicts.

  • Uncertainty is normal

Look-alike species, worn specimens and regional differences make some identifications provisional. We say so.

  • Proportion over perfection

A healthy garden carries some damage. We help you judge when it is cosmetic and when it matters.

How we work

Each guide is drafted from field observation in temperate gardens and checked against established published sources, including the Royal Horticultural Society, the Xerces Society, Buglife, Butterfly Conservation, the Bumblebee Conservation Trust and university extension services. Where trials or expert opinion disagree — as with many slug barriers — we report the disagreement.

Our writing is aimed at home gardeners, mainly in Britain, Ireland and similar temperate climates. We flag where North American readers will meet different species.

Independence: Puff Riddle Gardn Ltd is not affiliated with any pesticide manufacturer, retailer, biological-control supplier or conservation charity mentioned on this site. We do not accept sponsored content or affiliate commissions. Mentions of organisations and books are for reference only.
